Here are a few points that you may find useful when looking for mobile phone insurance:

  • Mobile phone insurance is sometimes regarded as part of what is generically called ‘gadget insurance’ – a category of cover that includes things such as PDAs, iphones, cameras and laptop computers etc;

  • The cover provided may typically be described as including all or some of the following elements – theft, accidental destruction and breakdown cover (outside of the manufacturer’s warranty period) – some policies may also include an option for covering yourself against loss;

  • To really compare one mobile phone insurance quote or policy against another, it may be necessary to look behind these headlines categories, at the fine detail;

  • One thing that may be well worth examining is whether or not the policy will provide you with a guaranteed fast replacement (perhaps within 48 hours of claim approval) of your phone – this may prove to be a huge benefit if you wish to minimise the amount of time that you are out of contact;

  • Some policies may have what is called ‘unattended theft’ cover, which basically means that your phone will typically be covered even if it is not in your possession at the time it is stolen (provided it was securely locked away) – some policies may not cover this scenario at all;

  • Keep in mind that if you travel outside of the UK, having a policy that provides global insurance coverage, as standard, may be a big advantage and provide you with a little more peace of mind;

  • Some insurance providers thoughtfully offer up to 3GB of storage on their system so that you can back up some of your critical data ready for fast restore, should the worst happen;

  • If your mobile phone is stolen, one of the more annoying aspects is when you subsequently need to pay for any calls the thief has made in between the theft and you being able to get your service provider to cut the line – this is called ‘airtime abuse’ and some policies may cover these costs for you;

  • As you would expect with any insurance product, terms and conditions, exclusions and limitations will apply and you may wish to read these carefully to ensure you understand them – those of some insurance providers may be rather more suitable for your requirements than others;

  • Finally, be sure to check carefully the excess (the amount you may need to contribute towards any claim) on any mobile phone insurance policy – they may vary considerably and some may seem to you to be rather more reasonable than others.
